Judge Sandra Ray for NC Court of Appeals Endorsed by the NC Fraternal Order of Police & The NC Troopers Association

I will bring a strong working knowledge of our Judicial System, our constitution and the laws of our state of the NC Court of Appeals. I clearly understand that my role as a Judge is to interpret the law as written and not make law from the bench.

I am the only Republican NC Court of Appeals candidate to be endorsed by both the North Carolina Trooper’s Association and North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police. I am also the only candidate for NC Court of Appeals Seat Two, not endorsed by a political party. Judicial positions should not be political. We represent the people. I want to be your judge, the people’s judge.

Judge Sandra Alice Ray Announces Her Candidacy for the North Carolina Court of Appeals

With 27 years of legal experience including 14 years of judicial experience, Judge Ray has more judicial experience than all other announced candidates for Court of Appeals combined.

Wilmington, NC - Judge Sandra Alice Ray announced this morning that she will be a candidate for the NC Court of Appeals seat currently held by Justice Ann Marie Calabria, who is not running for re-election. Judge Ray has more judicial experience than all other announced candidates for NC Court of Appeals combined.

“It is an honor to announce my candidacy for the seat on the North Carolina Court of Appeals that will be vacated by Judge Ann Marie Calabria,” Judge Ray said earlier this morning. “I would like to thank Judge Calabria for her hard work, her determination and her excellent service to our state and our courts. She is an excellent role model and outstanding example of what a Court of Appeals Judge should be.”

“As a former prosecutor for the Fifth Judicial District, an attorney in private practice focusing on criminal and civil law in District and Superior Court, and as a District Court Judge, I will bring a unique perspective to our state’s Court of Appeals,” Judge Ray continued. “With 27 years of legal experience, including 14 years as a Judge, I have more judicial experience than all other announced Court of Appeals candidates combined. I’ve prosecuted criminals, defended the accused, represented plaintiffs and defendants in civil court, and presided over tens of thousands of cases as a judge. I’ve been a part of almost every type of legal case you could imagine.”

Presently, Judge Ray is a District Court Judge in the Fifth Judicial District and was first elected in 2004. Prior to her election as Judge, Ray practiced law as an Assistant District Attorney with the District Attorney’s office for the 5th Judicial District in Wilmington, NC. In 1996, Judge Ray joined the law firm of Jackson, Rivenbark and Slaughter and opened her own law firm in 2002. Judge Ray handled both criminal and civil cases, ranging from traffic infractions to capital murder cases to civil cases, where she was able to settle one case for 1.3 million dollars for one of her clients.

“I will bring a strong working knowledge of our Judicial System, our constitution and the laws of our state to the NC Court of Appeals,” Judge Ray concluded. “I clearly understand that the job of a Judge is to interpret the law as written and not to make law from the bench. I am ready to hit the ground running, and I will work tirelessly to be a Judge who will make you proud.”

In her 14 years on the bench Judge Ray has presided over cases in:
Felony Court
Abuse and Neglect Court
Juvenile Court
Criminal District Court
Civil Court
Child Support Court
Domestic Violence Court
Divorce Court
First Appearances in Criminal Court
Mental Commitments
DWI Car Seizure Hearings

Judge Ray is a proud single mother of three children: Meredith, Elizabeth and Sherman aka Brother. Born in Charleston, SC, she grew up in both Warsaw and Wrightsville Beach, NC. Judge Ray received an Associate’s Degree from St. Mary’s College in Raleigh, NC and a Bachelor’s Degree from North Carolina State University. She earned her Juris Doctor at Campbell Law School. The Ray family are members of the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk at Wrightsville Beach.

Judge Ray is also a very active member of the Republican Party who has worked tirelessly for two decades to help elect conservative Republicans in New Hanover County and across Southeastern North Carolina. She presently serves as President of the Lower Cape Fear Republican Women’s Club.
